2009 Gala: An Evening of Inspiration & CelebrationJoin us for an evening of inspiration and celebration as we honor a champion committed to education and college affordability, Bill Fitzsimmons, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Havard College.
Each year, ACCESS recognizes the extraordinary accomplishments of individuals and organizations committed to ensuring that all of Boston's youth have the education and opportunities necessary to lead successful, fulfilling lives.
ACCESS is proud to honor Bill Fitzsimmons, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Harvard College, for being a pioneer for college affordability and setting a precedent at Harvard and across academia that an institution of higher education should aim for economic diversity as well as cultural diversity. It was Dean Fitzsimmons’ vision and leadership that resulted in Harvard dramatically altering the structure of their student financial aid program, significantly lowering – and in many cases eliminating – the cost of tuition for middle and lower income families. His efforts have begun to transform the educational landscape. Harvard’s policies have set a standard that has since been adopted by other schools resulting in greater opportunity for the many academically prepared students unable to afford the rising cost of college.
Funds raised from the Gala support ACCESS's high quality advising and scholarship programs. Past award recipients include: Mayor Thomas M Menino, Robert L. Beal, President and CEO of The Beal Companies, Barbara Lynch, Executive Chef/Owner of No. 9 Park, Clayton H. W. Turnbull, President and CEO of The Waldwin Group, Inc., Larry Lucchino, President and CEO, Boston Red Sox, Linda Whitlock, President and CEO, Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, Henri Termeer, President and CEO, Genzyme Corporation, The Honorable Robert Travaglini, President, Massachusetts State Senate.
