Governor Cuts Funding for Scholarships for Boston Youth

July 14, 2008 – With a stroke of the pen, Governor Deval Patrick yesterday reduced financial aid funding for higher education from $350,000 to $100,000 – putting the higher education dreams of nearly 250 Boston Public School students at risk.

ACCESS Awarded Out of the Blue Grant

June 19, 2008 –  ACCESS has been awarded a $75,000 Out of the Blue grant by the Boston Foundation in recognition of “exceptional leadership” in the Boston nonprofit sector. On a quarterly basis, the Boston Foundation awards an Out of the Blue grant – unsolicited and unrestricted – to a single area nonprofit.

ACCESS Board member appointed to chair State Board of Education

June 19, 2008 - Maura Banta, an ACCESS Board member, will assume the position of Chairwoman of the State Board of Education as of July 1st, Governor Deval Patrick announced yesterday. Banta has worked on many education reform initiatives and has been a leading champion for greater involvement and engagement by the Massachusetts business community in the improvement of educational opportunities of the state's young people.

ACCESS appears on NECN's Nightly News

ACCESS was featured in a cover story for NECN's nightly news at 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 29th, and again at noon on Friday, May 30th.  The segment, called Boston Students Find "Access" To College, featured the story of ACCESS Scholar Luz Mederos and her journey to college.  The story also presented ACCESS advisor and program staff perspectives on how ACCESS ensures that Boston youth reach their higher education dreams.

ACCESS Honors Mayor Menino at Evening of Inspiration and Recognition

Boston – May 29, 2008 – ACCESS, Boston’s leading provider of financial aid advising and scholarships, honored Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino – the City’s leading champion for increased opportunity and access to higher education for all of Boston’s youth. The annual dinner event also celebrated the organization’s third year of exponential growth in service to the students and families of Boston.
