Rising Fees Undercut Adams Scholarships to UMass

On Monday, 355 Boston Latin School seniors are scheduled to receive photocopied letters announcing their qualification as Adams Scholars, and while those scholarships offer some relief during tough economic times, the free tuition they provide to any Massachusetts state school covers only a fraction of the cost of attending.

In many other states free tuition to any state school would be a financial boon that is nearly a free education, but in Massachusetts it makes only a small dent in the cost of attending college. Over the years, only about a quarter of the roughly 17,000 to 18,000 students who qualify as Adams Scholars have taken the state up on the offer, with most opting for other options. Some also have an outsized impression of what the scholarship offers.

“A lot of students and a lot of parents... assume the scholarship is paying for everything,” said Bob Giannino-Racine, director of ACCESS, which helps low-income students pay for college. “We hear it all the time.”
